Education
The MICAH Education Task Force is currently engaged in an ongoing campaign to hold Milwaukee Public Schools to an expectation of transparency and accountability regarding the historic and unacceptable opportunity gaps in the education of our Black students, as well as the disproportionate discipline of Black male students. The MICAH Education Task Force has been developing a sustainable framework for our efforts.
We are advocating for change in the following areas, toward Milwaukee “Doing our P.A.R.T.” for MPS—Practices, Authority, Resources and Transparency:
Practices
MICAH calls for best practices to be implemented in responding to the Office of Civil Rights Resolution #05-14-5003, and in following Administrative Procedures of the Milwaukee Public Schools Administrative Procedure—Efforts to Achieve Equity.
Authority
MICAH calls for the MPS Equity Specialist, the Black and Latino Male Achievement (BLMA) Office, and the MPS OCR Resolution Team to all become direct reports to the Superintendent of Milwaukee Public Schools. If equity is actually a district priority, it must be a priority for MPS administration.
Resources
MICAH calls for resources, including personnel, to be prioritized for the Equity Specialist, the BLMA Office, and the OCR Resolution team, and in our schools, based on equity best practices.4. Transparency: MICAH calls for continued transparency from the Milwaukee Board of School Directors and MPS administration in sharing data and in including parents and the community in decisions regarding all aspects of equity efforts in MPS.
Transparency:
MICAH calls for continued transparency from the Milwaukee Board of School Directors and MPS administration in sharing data and in including parents and the community in decisions regarding all aspects of equity efforts in MPS.
